You Can Learn Marketing in Weeks. Building a Business Takes Longer.
You can learn marketing strategies in a few weeks. But building a successful freelance business takes much longer.
Marketing doesn’t work on demand. The clients you reach out to today may not need a freelancer for months. A conversation at a conference might turn into a project next year. A client who finds you on LinkedIn may want to hire you right away—until the project gets delayed or cancelled.
When I created my first marketing course for freelancers in 2016, my goal was simple: teach freelancers the marketing strategies that had helped me build a six-figure freelance business.
The course helped hundreds of freelancers gain clarity about marketing. They learned how to identify the right clients, communicate their value, and begin building relationships that could lead to future work.
But over time, I noticed something. Learning marketing wasn’t the biggest challenge.
Doing it consistently was.
Many freelancers finished the course feeling motivated. Then client work picked up. Deadlines took over. Marketing slowly moved to the bottom of the to-do list until work slowed down. And the stress returned.
I realized that most freelancers didn’t need more information. They needed ongoing guidance, accountability, and support while they built new marketing habits.
That’s why I created Freelance Flow, a yearlong coaching program that helps freelance medical writers and editors build a marketing system that grows with your business.
A year gives you time to develop marketing that clearly shows clients your value, build relationships, learn what works best for you, and make marketing a consistent part of your business.
You Build Your Business One Step at a Time
Freelance Flow is designed to help you build your marketing foundation step by step with personalized coaching, feedback, and ongoing support and accountability.
Together, we define your services, identify the clients who are the best fit for your background and experience, develop marketing messages that communicate your value, strengthen your LinkedIn profile and website, improve your networking, and create a marketing routine you can realistically maintain.
Personalized Coaching Makes Every Strategy More Effective
No two freelance businesses are the same.
A new freelancer trying to find a first client needs different guidance than someone who has freelanced for 10 years but is facing market-based challenges or wants to shift to new types of work.
That’s why personalized coaching is such an important part of Freelance Flow.
During our monthly coaching sessions, we review your progress, solve problems together, and focus on next steps to build your business. Between sessions, you can email me with questions, get feedback on assignments, and ask for guidance when new challenges come up.
Instead of wondering whether you’re doing the right things, you have someone helping you make informed decisions based on your business and your goals.
One of the biggest challenges freelancers face isn’t knowing what to do. It’s doing it consistently.
Marketing often gets pushed aside when client deadlines become busy. Then, when work slows down, freelancers find themselves scrambling to find their next project.
Freelance Flow helps you build a realistic marketing routine that fits your schedule. Over the course of a year, marketing becomes part of how you run your business instead of something you only think about during slow periods.
Real Freelancers, Real Progress
For nearly 20 years, Heidi Sawyer, PharmD, built a successful freelance business, Formulary Resources, LLC, with very little marketing. But as larger companies entered her specialty—AMCP dossiers and P&T monographs—finding new clients became more challenging.
Like many freelancers, Heidi found marketing uncomfortable and overwhelming. She had a LinkedIn profile, a website, and professional connections, yet she wasn’t attracting the steady, high-paying clients she wanted.
During Freelance Flow, Heidi learned that effective marketing wasn’t about selling herself—it was about helping clients understand how she could solve their problems. She clarified her target clients, strengthened her LinkedIn profile and website, became more active on LinkedIn, and learned to network and follow up with confidence.
With personalized coaching, ongoing feedback, and accountability, Heidi developed clearer marketing messages, greater confidence, and a consistent marketing routine she can continue using long after the program ended.
By the end of the year, Heidi had attracted three new clients and was on track for her highest-income year.
Adriene (Addie) Nagy faced a different challenge.
She had launched her freelance business, Wordsmith Medical Writing Solutions, with one referral client, but when that work slowed, she realized she didn’t know how to market her services or find steady, high-paying clients.
Throughout the year, she clarified her message, built confidence in her marketing, and developed stronger client relationships.
By the end of the program, she had seven new clients—most providing steady work and paying rates that reflected her expertise—and had moved from entry-level CME writing into higher-paying CME projects.
She described the experience this way:
“Lori provided so much value. It just blows me away. Her honesty and insights have helped me refine my message and showcase my work in a way that feels authentic and true to who I am.”
While participating in Freelance Flow, Addie also invested in a six-month CME writing training program, WriteCMEPro Accelerator. She learned about, adult learning principles, educational design, spotting clinical practice gaps, and how to create CME deliverables.
Together, her CME training and marketing coaching gave Addie the expertise to create the CME content clients needed and the marketing skills to communicate that value to prospective clients.
Heidi and Addie came to Freelance Flow with very different businesses, different levels of experience, and different goals. What they had in common was a willingness to do the work, apply what they learned, and continue refining their marketing over time.
“Joining Freelance Flow really accelerated the growth of my business and set a good precedent for investing in my business,” says Heidi.
“Lori somehow makes the hardest parts of marketing feel approachable and even fun,” adds Addie.
You Don’t Just Learn Marketing. You Build a Marketing System.
The goal of Freelance Flow isn’t simply to teach you marketing concepts.
It’s to help you consistently market your freelance business as you get clients and lay the foundation for future opportunities—and to give you a marketing system you can continue using long after the program ends.
That’s why Freelance Flow lasts a year.
Building a stable, successful freelance business isn’t about learning more about marketing. It’s about putting that knowledge into practice, refining it with expert guidance, and developing marketing habits that will continue serving you for years to come.
Is Freelance Flow Right for You?
Freelance Flow is a 12-month coaching program for freelance medical writers and editors who want to build a stable, sustainable business. It’s part of a proven marketing system that will help you identify and attract the right clients by communicating your value clearly, focus your marketing on what works best, and market consistently.
Every freelance business is different.
Your experience, goals, strengths, and marketing challenges are unique to you. That’s why the first step isn’t enrolling in Freelance Flow—it’s having a conversation.
During a free 30-minute virtual coaching session, we’ll discuss:
- Where your freelance business is today
- The marketing challenges you’re facing
- Your goals for your business
- Whether Freelance Flow is the right fit for you.
After our conversation, I’ll send you a brief written report that summarizes my recommendations, along with ideas you can use to strengthen your marketing. If Freelance Flow appears to be a good fit, I’ll also include additional information about the program so you can decide whether you’d like to move forward.
The coaching session is designed to help you gain clarity—not to pressure you into making a decision.
