Can you Use AI Tools to Create the Perfect LinkedIn Profile?

AI tools

Wouldn’t it be great if you could use AIs tool to quickly and easily create the perfect LinkedIn profile? I did some experiments to see if this was possible. Here’s what happened.

When I heard about a webinar on using AI to write your LinkedIn profile, I was intrigued. So I signed up. Then I experimented with different AI tools for writing my LinkedIn profile.

Unfortunately, I found what I expected to find. AI cannot write a compelling, client-focused profile. AI tools like ChatGPT and: Perplexity don’t understand how LinkedIn’s search algorithm works. So they can’t create a profile that will help you rank high in search results when clients are looking for a freelancer like you.

But there is a way you can use AI tools to help develop your profile.

Here’s what happened when I tried to use AI tools to write my headline and About section.

Using AI Tools for Your LinkedIn Profile

I started with the free version of ChatGPT. Then I searched for other AI tools for LinkedIn profiles, like Jasper AI and Texta.

Jasper AI promised to help me to write the “Perfect LinkedIn Profile in 20 Minutes.” Sounds great, right? But you need a paid plan to do this. I started to sign up for the free 7-day trial and what I expected happened: To get the free trial, I had to enter my credit card information. The cheapest plan is $39 month. Texta promised I could “get the perfect LinkedIn profile summary in seconds.” But you also need a paid plan for this.

Unless you’re going to be using an AI tool regularly, it doesn’t make sense to pay for it.

Finally, I tried another AI tool I had recently learned about: Perplexity. This was much better than ChatGPT—but still not nearly as good as the profile I wrote myself. Like ChatGPT, Perplexity offers free and paid versions. I used the free version.

Crafting a Compelling, Client-Focused Headline

The most important part of your LinkedIn profile is the headline, especially relevant keywords, which help you rank higher in search results.

Clearly say what you do and how you help your clients. Use relevant keywords, especially “freelancer” and “freelance [writer, editor, etc.]” and your services.

Here’s my real LinkedIn profile headline:

Freelance Medical Writer | Targeted Content to Attract, Engage, and Motivate Your Audience(s) | On time, Every time |

Using AI Tools to Write Your Headline

First, I used Perplexity and Chat GPT to write a headline for me (as if I didn’t already have a profile).

Prompt:

Create 10 headlines for my LinkedIn profile in less than 220 characters. I’m a freelance medical writer. I help my clients attract, engage, and motivate their audiences through targeted content geared toward each audience. I do my work and deliver it on time.

Results from Perplexity:

    1. Crafting Compelling Medical Content: Engaging Audiences, Empowering Patients.
    2. Precision in Words: Translating Complex Medical Concepts into Accessible Narratives.
    3. Storytelling for Healthcare: Captivating Audiences with Impactful Medical Content.
    4. Bridging the Gap: Connecting Healthcare Providers and Patients through Targeted Writing.
    5. Unleashing the Power of Words: Elevating Medical Brands with Engaging Content.
    6. Mastering the Art of Medical Storytelling: Captivating Audiences, Inspiring Action.
    7. Crafting Clarity in Healthcare: Transforming Complex Data into Compelling Narratives.
    8. Unlocking the Potential of Medical Content: Engaging Audiences, Driving Results.
    9. Precision Meets Passion: Delivering Impactful Medical Writing on Time, Every Time.
    10. Elevating Healthcare Communication: Crafting Targeted Content that Resonates.

Comments about these headlines:

  1. None of these headlines uses “freelance medical writer” so clients won’t find me when they search for a freelance medical writer.
  2. While these headlines do include a benefit (how I help my clients), they don’t include my branding (“targeted medical content” and “attract, engage and motivate”). Most don’t include “On time. Every time,” which is another key marketing message. My original headline, developed based on (1) the needs of my clients and how I meet them and (2) LinkedIn’s search algorithm, is much better.

Results from Chat GPT:

    1. Freelance Medical Writer | Expert in Audience-Targeted Content | On-Time Delivery Specialist
    2. ✍️ Crafting Engaging Medical Content | Freelance Writer for Healthcare Audiences | Timely Project Delivery
    3. 🚀 Freelance Medical Writer | Audience Engagement Specialist | Punctual & Precise Content Creator
    4. 🩺 Medical Writing Expert | Freelance Content Creator | Audience Engagement & Timely Delivery
    5. 🖋️ Freelance Medical Writer | Targeted Healthcare Content | Consistent On-Time Delivery
    6. 🎯 Medical Writing Professional | Engaging Content for Healthcare Audiences | Always On Time
    7. ✍️ Freelance Medical Writer | Expert in Crafting Targeted Healthcare Content | Reliable & Timely
    8. 🚀 Medical Content Specialist | Freelance Writer | Delivering Targeted & On-Time Content
    9. 🩺 Healthcare Content Creator | Freelance Medical Writer | Audience Engagement & Timely Results
    10. 🖋️ Expert Freelance Medical Writer | Audience-Focused Content | Timely Delivery Every Time

Comments about these headlines:

  1. A few of these headlines do use “freelance medical writer” but most don’t.
  1. Most of the language is awkward (e.g., “Audience-Targeted Content”, “On-Time Delivery Specialist”
  1. These headlines include very little of my branding.
  2. I’m not a fan of emojis in LinkedIn headlines.

My original client-focused, LinkedIn-algorithm based headline is much better than any headline generated by AI.

Follow-up prompt:

Next, I revised my prompt to ask the AI tools to “include freelance medical writer in the headline.”

Results for Perplexity:

    1. Crafting Clarity: A Freelance Medical Writer Translating Complex Concepts.
    2. The Storyteller’s Pen: A Freelance Medical Writer Captivating Audiences.
    3. Precision in Words: A Freelance Medical Writer’s Mastery.
    4. Bridging Healthcare Gaps: A Freelance Medical Writer’s Mission.
    5. Unleashing Medical Narratives: A Freelance Medical Writer’s Expertise.
    6. The Freelance Medical Writer: Engaging Audiences, Empowering Patients.
    7. Transforming Data into Compelling Stories: A Freelance Medical Writer’s Art.
    8. The Freelance Medical Writer: Unlocking the Potential of Healthcare Content.
    9. Delivering Impactful Medical Writing: A Freelance Medical Writer’s Commitment.
    10. The Freelance Medical Writer: Elevating Healthcare Communication Nationwide.

Comments about these headlines:

These headlines are terrible! They’re awkward and don’t tell clients how I help them.

 Results for Chat GPT:

    1. Freelance Medical Writer | Crafting Targeted Content to Engage and Motivate Audiences | Reliable & On-Time Delivery
    2. Freelance Medical Writer | Specialized in Creating Engaging, Audience-Specific Content | Punctual & Professional
    3. Freelance Medical Writer | Expert in Audience-Targeted Medical Content | Delivering Quality Work On Time
    4. Freelance Medical Writer | Helping Clients Attract and Engage Audiences with Targeted Medical Content | Always On Time
    5. Freelance Medical Writer | Creating Compelling, Audience-Centric Medical Content | Timely and Dependable
    6. Freelance Medical Writer | Engaging and Motivating Audiences through Precise Medical Content | On-Time Delivery Guaranteed
    7. Freelance Medical Writer | Skilled in Crafting Targeted Content for Medical Audiences | Reliable & Timely Service
    8. Freelance Medical Writer | Expert in Audience-Specific Medical Writing | Consistently On Time, Every Time
    9. Freelance Medical Writer | Delivering Engaging, Targeted Medical Content | Always Reliable and On Schedule
    10. Freelance Medical Writer | Specializing in Audience-Driven Medical Content | Timely, Quality Deliveries Crafting Clarity: A Freelance Medical Writer Translating Complex Concepts.

Comments about these headlines:

These headlines are better than Perplexity’s but most still aren’t very good. “Freelance Medical Writer | Delivering Engaging, Targeted Medical Content | Always Reliable and On Schedule” and “Freelance Medical Writer | Crafting Targeted Content to Engage and Motivate Audiences | Reliable & On-Time Delivery” aren’t bad.

Using AI Tools to Improve My Current Headline

Then I asked the AI tools to improve my current headline.

Prompt:

Prompt: Create 10 versions of this headline for a LinkedIn profile. Freelance Medical Writer | Targeted Content to Attract, Engage, and Motivate Your Audience(s) | On time, Every time

ChatGPT Results:

    1. Freelance Medical Writer | Crafting Targeted Content to Captivate and Engage Your Audience | Punctual and Reliable
    2. Freelance Medical Writer | Specialized Content to Attract and Inspire Your Audience | Always On Time
    3. Freelance Medical Writer | Expertly Written Content to Engage and Motivate | Dependable Delivery
    4. Freelance Medical Writer | Tailored Medical Content to Reach and Retain Your Audience | Timely Every Time
    5. Freelance Medical Writer | Engaging Content to Attract and Motivate Your Audience | Reliable and On Time
    6. Freelance Medical Writer | Precision Content to Captivate Your Audience | Consistent and Timely
    7. Freelance Medical Writer | Strategic Content to Engage and Inspire Your Audience | On Time, Every Time
    8. Freelance Medical Writer | Targeted Medical Content to Attract and Engage | Dependable Delivery, Every Time
    9. Freelance Medical Writer | Custom Content to Motivate and Captivate Your Audience | Always Punctual
    10. Freelance Medical Writer | High-Impact Content to Attract and Engage Audiences | Reliable, On-Time Delivery

Comments about these headlines:

My branding, “Targeted Content to Attract, Engage, and Motivate Your Audience(s),” is just more engaging and powerful than “Specialized Content to Attract and Inspire Your Audience.” Likewise, “On time, Every time” is much more engaging and interesting than “Dependable Delivery, Every Time,” “Reliable, On-Time Delivery,” etc.

Perplexity Results:

    1. Freelance Medical Writer: Crafting Compelling Content to Captivate Healthcare Audiences
    2. Medical Storyteller: Transforming Complex Ideas into Engaging Narratives
    3. Precision Wordsmith: Delivering Targeted Medical Content with Accuracy and Impact
    4. Healthcare Content Strategist: Driving Engagement and Action through Tailored Messaging
    5. Medical Communications Specialist: Bridging the Gap between Science and Audience Understanding
    6. Freelance Medical Copywriter: Elevating Your Brand with Persuasive and Informative Content
    7. Healthcare Content Alchemist: Turning Complex Data into Captivating Stories
    8. Medical Messaging Maestro: Orchestrating Impactful Content for Healthcare Brands
    9. Freelance Medical Wordsmith: Crafting Compelling Narratives that Resonate with Your Audience
    10. Healthcare Content Architect: Designing Engaging and Informative Experiences for Your Audience

Comments about these headlines:

Only one headline includes “freelance medical writer.” One headline says “freelance medical copywriter,” but that’s wrong. I’m not a copywriter. Some of these headlines are clever but not meaningful enough. Others aren’t accurate. Bridging the Gap between Science and Audience Understanding

Once again, my original client-focused, LinkedIn-algorithm based headline is much better than any headline generated by AI.

Using AI Tools to Write About

Next, I tried to use AI to write my About section of my LinkedIn profile. In About, the first 220-270 characters with spaces count most. That’s what shows before clients have to click see more. On mobile devices, about 102-167 characters show.

The first 220-270 characters should build on your headline and offer a clear, concise client-focused message. As much of this message as possible should be in the first 102-167 characters to attract clients viewing your profile on a smart phone or tablet.

I started by asking the AI tools to write the first two sentences of About.

Prompt:

Write the first two sentences of my LinkedIn profile About section. I’m a freelance medical writer who helps clients attract, engage, and motivate their audiences. I write targeted content and deliver it on time. I work with hospitals/health systems, healthcare marketing agencies, disease-focused health organizations

Chat GPT Results:

As a freelance medical writer, I specialize in creating targeted content that attracts, engages, and motivates healthcare audiences. With a commitment to timely delivery, I collaborate with hospitals, healthcare marketing agencies, and disease-focused health organizations to effectively communicate complex medical information.

Before needing to click “see more,” clients will see something like this:

As a freelance medical writer, I specialize in creating targeted content that attracts, engages, and motivates healthcare audiences. With a commitment to timely delivery, I collaborate with hospitals, healthcare marketing

(222) characters)

Comments about this beginning of About:

This isn’t bad. But the beginning of About that I wrote is stronger:

Targeted medical content attracts, engages, and motivates your audience(s). As a freelance medical writer, I help hospitals/health systems, healthcare marketing agencies, disease-focused health organizations, and other clients focus on what’s relevant and useful to each audience:

My About beginning builds on the targeted content concept with “focus on what’s relevant and useful to each audience.” And “a commitment to” is weak. Clients don’t care about our commitment, passion, etc.

While “On time, every time” is one of my key marketing messages, this is in my headline and doesn’t need to be repeated in the beginning of About. It’s much more relevant to clients to build on the targeted content concept with “focus on what’s relevant and useful to each audience.”

Perplexity Results:

Option 1

As a freelance medical writer, I specialize in crafting compelling content that attracts, engages, and motivates audiences in the healthcare industry. With a deep understanding of the field, I collaborate with hospitals, health systems, marketing agencies, and disease-focused organizations to deliver targeted, high-quality content on time.

Before needing to click “see more,” clients will see something like this:

As a freelance medical writer, I specialize in crafting compelling content that attracts, engages, and motivates audiences in the healthcare industry. With a deep understanding of the field, I collaborate with hospitals, health

           (228 characters)

Comments about this beginning of About:

This is pretty good. I really like the first sentence.

But the second sentence is only okay. “With a deep understanding of the field,” isn’t very meaningful, “collaborate” with clients isn’t a focus of my work, and “high-quality” is vague and over-used.

So again, it’s much more relevant to clients to build on the targeted content concept with “focus on what’s relevant and useful to each audience.”

Option 2

Leveraging my expertise as a freelance medical writer, I partner with clients in the healthcare sector to create engaging and motivating content tailored to their unique needs. Whether working with hospitals, health systems, marketing agencies, or disease-focused organizations, I deliver accurate and impactful messaging that resonates with their target audiences, always meeting deadlines.

Before needing to click “see more,” clients will see something like this:

Leveraging my expertise as a freelance medical writer, I partner with clients in the healthcare sector to create engaging and motivating content tailored to their unique needs. Whether working with hospitals, health systems

(224 characters)

Comments about this beginning of About:

  1. It doesn’t use my branding (e.g., “attracts, engages, and motivates”) or build on my headline.
  2. “Leveraging my expertise” sounds like I’m bragging and is a terrible message for the very beginning of About.
  3. The second sentence isn’t bad but I wouldn’t say “unique needs.”
  4. I don’t like the third sentence at all. Most of my work isn’t “messaging” and “always meeting deadlines” seems awkward.

Revising the Beginning of an About section

Next, I tried to use AI to revise the beginning of my About section.

Prompt:

Revise the first two sentences of my LinkedIn profile About beginning to focus on the benefits clients get by working with me.Targeted medical content attracts, engages, and motivates your audience(s). As a freelance medical writer, I help hospitals/health systems, healthcare marketing agencies, disease-focused health organizations, and other clients focus on what’s relevant and useful to each audience.

ChatGPT Results:

Partnering with me ensures your medical content attracts, engages, and motivates your target audiences effectively. As a freelance medical writer, I empower hospitals, healthcare marketing agencies, and health organizations to deliver relevant and impactful information to their audiences.”

Before needing to click “see more,” clients will see something like this:

Partnering with me ensures your medical content attracts, engages, and motivates your target audiences effectively. As a freelance medical writer, I empower hospitals, healthcare marketing agencies, and health organizations

(223) characters

Comments on this beginning of About:

Much to my surprise, ChatGPT did a good job with this About beginning. The first line uses my branding (“attracts, engages, and motivates your target audiences”) and “medical content,” which is the term I use to describe my overall work. The second sentence includes “freelance medical writer” and the types of clients I work with.

I don’t think “empower” works and I don’t like “impactful” in this context. But it would be easy to use this headline and just substitute different words for “empower” and “impactful.”

Perplexity Results:

Engaging Medical Content to Attract and Motivate Your Audiences

As a freelance medical writer, I craft compelling, audience-focused content that helps you connect with your target markets more effectively. Whether you need to engage patients, educate healthcare professionals, or promote your healthcare brand, my expertise ensures your messaging resonates. I collaborate with hospitals, health systems, marketing agencies, disease organizations, and other clients to develop high-quality, relevant content tailored to your unique goals and audiences.

Before needing to click “see more,” clients will see something like this:

Engaging Medical Content to Attract and Motivate Your Audiences

As a freelance medical writer, I craft compelling, audience-focused content that helps you connect with your target markets more effectively. Whether you need

(221 characters)

Comments on this beginning of About:

Perplexity did a fairly good job with this About beginning. The first sentence works well and the second sentence has some interesting new messaging”) engage patients, educate healthcare professionals, or promote your healthcare brand”). I would have said “inform and educate” healthcare professionals but that’s a minor change I could make on my own.

I don’t like “my expertise ensures your messaging resonates.” It seems a little like bragging to me and “messaging” implies a more strategic approach that most of my work involves. In the next sentence, the term “high-quality,” is vague and overused. While I like the concept of “tailored to your unique goals and audiences,” I would not have used “unique.”

But this About beginning doesn’t use my branding (“attract, engage, and motivate your target audiences”).

Using AI Tools to Write the Rest of About

Finally, I used AI tools to write my About section. To keep this simple, I left out the information in my profile about how I use AI and the information about The Mighty Marketer.

Prompt:

I look forward to helping you achieve your communication goals!

As a seasoned freelance medical writer, I specialize in crafting compelling, targeted content that helps clients attract, engage, and motivate their audiences

Comments about this About section:

The beginning of About focuses too much on me, not how I help my clients. “27 years of experience,” which is later in my profile, is more powerful and more specific than “seasoned” in the first sentence.

“Count on me,” the language in my prompt and my actual profile, is much more engaging than “rely on me.”

I wouldn’t use “precise” or “impactful” to describe my work but this is fairly minor. I could easily choose different words here.

“. . .  deliver content that resonates and informs” is an incomplete thought. The end of this sentence should say something like “resonates and informs your audiences.” Plus I would not use “resonates” in my marketing messages. My branding, “attract, engage, and motivate” is much better.

There are no subheads in the ChatGPT profile, which help clients quickly get key marketing messages.

The call to action at the end is terrible! “Content that makes a difference” is vague. And my website email and phone number should be in a bulleted list for easy scanning, not a hard-to-read sentence.

“I look forward to helping you achieve your communication goals!” sounds like the close of an email, not a LinkedIn profile.

Comments about this About section:

Perplexity did a much better job than Chat GPT or writing my LinkedIn About section. But there are problems with this About too:

  1. About should not start with a subhead.
  2. The first sentence is duplicative; it says both “seasoned” and “27 years of experience.” the specifics (27 years) is much better.
  3. About has extra content that lessens the impact of the About content, such as “I specialize in“I create” is more powerful. Likewise, “my expertise lies in” is unnecessary. “Whether you’re a hospital or health system, a healthcare marketing agency, a disease-focused health organization, or any other client in the healthcare industry, . . .” detracts from the call to action.
  4. “My extensive portfolio” is too braggy and not helpful.
  5. Perplexity put my therapeutic areas in narrative instead of a scannable bulleted list, making it harder to read. And these are NOT “healthcare domains.”
  6. My langauge, “My clients count on me for targeted medical content, delivered on time, every time. You can too.” is much more engaging and powerful than “My clients trust me to provide targeted medical content, delivered on time, every time.”
  7. “I am committed to meeting your content needs with professionalism and expertise.” is not effective. Clients don’t care about commitment; they care about results.
  8. “Find out how targeted medical content can help you” is more engaging and powerful than “Take the first step towards elevating your healthcare content and engaging your audience effectively.”

How to Use AI tools to Help Develop Your Profile

While AI tools cannot write your profile for you, you can use AI to get some ideas for your LinkedIn profile. Some of the words, phrases, and sentences in my experiment were good and I could have included them in my marketing messages and content.

But you need to carefully consider the results from AI tools and write a client-focused, LinkedIn-algorithm based profile.
