How Jerm Finds His Ideal Freelance Clients on LinkedIn

Like many new freelancers, Jeremy (Jerm) Day-Storms, PhD, MWC, had strong experience. But he didn’t know how to share that experience in a way that would help him grow his freelance business. He soon discovered that LinkedIn was the best way for him to get the ideal clients he deserved.

Before Jerm launched his freelance medical writing business in 2022, he had about 15 years of experience as a chemistry professor and a full-time medical writer in managed healthcare. After learning about the different types of medical writing he could do, Jerm realized that he had no idea where to start to market his freelance business.

Then Jerm heard about Finding the Freelance Clients You Deserve, a step-by-step, online course that uses a proven process for freelance marketing. During the course, he identified his specialty within medical writing and defined his ideal clients. Then he developed client-focused marketing messages based on their needs and how he could meet their needs.

Next, Jerm decided to focus on LinkedIn and networking as his key marketing strategies. In less than a year, Jerm got five ideal, steady, high-paying, clients through LinkedIn.

Identifying His Ideal Clients

But before he could focus on LinkedIn, Jerm had to develop his marketing foundation. Jerm needed to clearly identify his specialty within medical writing, define his ideal clients, and understand how he could meet their needs.

During Finding the Freelance Clients You Deserve, Jerm refined his specialty to focus on what clients were most likely to hire him to do and identified target markets (group of clients) that were most likely to need his help. Specific clients within these target markets became his ideal clients.

Jerm is using his expertise in medical policy, payer, and benefits management to focus on helping laboratories, healthcare payors, managed healthcare companies, biotech companies, and other clients communicate effectively with healthcare professionals and payers.

Developing Client-Focused Marketing

Next, Jerm developed client-focused marketing messages based on the needs of these clients and how he could meet their needs. He used these messages when he updated his LinkedIn profile and website. For example, Jerm’s LinkedIn profile headline is:

Freelance Medical Writer | Accurate, evidence-based, and timely medical content for laboratories, healthcare payors, managed healthcare companies, biotech companies, and other clients

Jerm’s About section builds on his headline and offers a clear, concise client-focused message. Next, Jerm lists his services. Then he included separate sections on three key target markets, focusing on how he meets their specific needs. His LinkedIn profile showcases his expertise and credibility at the intersection of medical policy, payer, and benefits management. Jerm also used similar marketing messages on his website.

“My LinkedIn profile is carefully curated to highlight my unique specialization and professional journey. I have highlighted relevant experiences and included examples of my work to provide potential clients with a sense of trust and reassurance about my expertise,” he says.

Now, Jerm ranks high in search results when clients searched for a freelancer because he optimized his profile for LinkedIn’s algorithm, including by using the right keywords in his headline.  Jerm has also gotten clients through LinkedIn by finding and reaching out to them there.

Focusing on Building Visibility and Authority on LinkedIn

Along with having a complete, client-focused profile, Jerm’s LinkedIn activity and a big, relevant, network help him rank high in search results when clients are looking for a freelancer.

Jerm posts on LinkedIn at least twice a week, focusing on medical writing and clinical practice guidelines and recommendations. Other posts cover a broad range of relevant topics. Each post is “carefully curated to align with the interests of my clients, potential clients, and followers,” he says.

Consistently posting about a few topics he knows about helps Jerm build his visibility and authority. Sharing knowledge, advice, and his perspective in these posts encourages LinkedIn to share his posts more widely.

One of Jerm’s clients hired him after reading some of his posts. This and other content he posts on LinkedIn “significantly contributes to attracting potential clients,” he says.

Having a network of 500+ relevant connections also helps more clients find Jerm. “Being connected to people within my industry often leads to new clients discovering my profile,” he says. “This network effect is amplified by my active participation in relevant discussions and my consistent engagement with industry-related content.”

Jerm usually spends at least 15 minutes a day on LinkedIn. He checks his feed, leaves comments to other posts, and responds to any activity on his posts. He also spends about one or two hours a week drafting his posts.

Enhancing Skills and Building Key Connections through Networking

Through networking, Jerm has enhanced his professional skills and built a solid foundation for his freelance business.

Jerm started volunteering for the Florida chapter of the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) a year before he launched his freelance business, while he was still working in the managed healthcare industry as a medical writer. He has served as secretary, treasurer, and a member of the Board of Directors. During his tenure as treasurer, Jerm learned about essential business paperwork and filings. This knowledge was crucial when he started his freelance business.

“By volunteering, I’ve met numerous professionals in the field, leading to new connections and opportunities,” he says.

Also, Jerm attends AMWA’s annual conference. “It’s a key opportunity for networking with fellow medical writers and enhancing my professional skills,” he says. “Each year, I’ve forged new connections and friendships, expanding my professional network.”

The conference sessions have helped Jerm enhance his communication and writing skills. He has gained practical advice, for example, on running a freelance business and effective networking, and stays updated on what’s happening in medical writing.

“The AMWA conference is not just an event, but a strategic investment in my ongoing professional development and career growth,” he says.
